MATERIAL RECOVERY OPTIONS THROUGHOUT REGION F
Region F supports the Missouri Counties of Johnson, Lafayette, Morgan, Pettis, and Saline in material recovery and landfill diversion options. This support includes community cleanups, recycling, e-waste, and household hazardous waste drop locations and pickup programs.
According to the EPA, the last recorded numbers state that in 2018, about 146.1 million tons of MSW were landfilled. Food was the largest component at about 24 percent. Plastics accounted for over 18 percent, paper and paperboard made up about 12 percent, and rubber, leather and textiles comprised over 11 percent. Other materials accounted for less than 10 percent each.
Measured by tonnage, the most-recycled products and materials in 2018 were corrugated boxes (32.1 million tons), mixed nondurable paper products (8.8 million tons), newspapers/mechanical papers (3.3 million tons), lead-acid batteries (2.9 million tons), major appliances (3.1 million tons), wood packaging (3.1 million tons), glass containers (3 million tons), tires (2.6 million tons), mixed paper containers and packaging (1.8 million tons) and selected consumer electronics (1 million tons). Collectively, these products accounted for 90 percent of total MSW recycling in 2018.

What is Dual-Stream Recycling?
Dual-Stream recycling, is a collection method that utilizes two curbside recycling bins that requires the resident to separate material by Rigids and Fibers. The Fiber cart typically included paper and cardboard and the Rigids cart typically includes containers.

Positives of implementing a Dual-Stream Recycling collection program in your community?
Dual-stream recycling collection methods is that residents can choose to customize their participation in the program. They can choose to utilize both the Fiber and Rigids cart, or they can choose to only recycle Fibers or Rigids, depending on what material they typically need to process in their home.
Dual-stream recycling collection method typically results in cleaner materials that there are purchasers for, dual-stream recycling can often be implemented in communities at a lower cost to residents than the high contamination single-stream programs.

What is Household Hazardous Waste?
The United States Environmental Protection Agency or EPA, classifies household hazardous waste as leftover products such as bleach, antifreeze, paint and various cleaners, adhesives, fertilizers and even light bulbs. These products pose a threat because they can catch fire, react, or even explode under certain circumstances. Improper disposal of household hazardous waste includes pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases throwing them out with the regular trash.
What is Electronic Waste?
“E-waste”, “electronic waste”, “e-scrap” and “end-of-life electronics” are terms often used to describe used electronics that are nearing the end of their useful life, and are discarded, donated or given to a recycler.
E-waste, represents two percent of America’s trash in landfills, but it equals seventy percent of overall toxic waste, according to the EPA

- Americans currently own more than 3 billion electronic products.
- The average American has 24 devices per household.
- Estimated 2.7 million tons of consumer electronics goods were generated in 2018. Of this, 1.04 million tons of selected consumer electronics were collected for recycling for a 38.5 percent recovery rate.

A common construction / industrial use is for Road Base – Dense well-graded aggregate, uniformly mixed, wetted, and densely compacted for building the foundation under a pavement.
